Mobile
Few digital technologies have had a greater impact on all our lives than mobile phones, indeed there are over 70 million mobiles in the UK, which is more than there are people. They are highly personal devices, and over 75% of us keep our phones within arms length for at least 16 hours per day.
Mobiles are rapidly replacing landlines in the home and are the ultimate example of technology convergence, combining music player, camera, video, radio, TV, sat nav and much more, all in a device no bigger than a mars bar. We love texting, sending over 7.7 billion texts in the UK each month, while over 8 million people of us now regularly browse the web via their phone.
Despite the broad uptake and flexibility of mobiles, organisations have been relatively slow to exploit the opportunities they present as a business tool. Some companies do now use them as the main phone contact number for their clients, a few use SMS text messaging, while fewer still have developed a mobile website. The result is that many businesses are missing a real opportunity to interact with their clients via a low cost communications tool which those same clients evidently like.
